A render lets people who do not read drawings see what is being proposed, which matters when the decision rests with buyers, a committee, or somebody choosing between two options. It is built from your plans, so its accuracy is limited by theirs — the model is measured rather than impressionistic. Materials and lighting are agreed at draft quality before the final images are produced, because that is the expensive pass. It is also the cheapest point at which to discover that something does not look the way everyone had assumed it would.
