Branding
Colour, type, tone of voice, and the rules for using them.
What this is for
Everything a business puts out reading as one company rather than several. Branding is the set of decisions that stop each new document, post and page from being designed from scratch: which colours, which typefaces, how things are worded, and what the rules are. It matters most once more than one person is producing material, because that is when drift begins. The deliverable is a system other people can follow without asking.
What it covers
- Colour and type
A palette and a type scale defined with the exact values needed to use them, including how they behave on dark backgrounds and in print.
- Tone of voice
How the business writes, shown with worked examples rather than adjectives — the same message written well and written badly.
- Brand guidelines
One document holding the decisions and the reasoning, written to be usable by a printer or a freelancer with no other context.
- Templates and assets
The documents you actually send — quotes, invoices, decks, social posts — set up so that using them is easier than not using them.
What you end up with
- Colour and type, defined
With exact values and contrast pairings that have been checked, so the palette does not fail the first time it meets small text.
- Tone of voice, with written examples
Real sentences from your own context. A description of a tone is not usable; an example of it is.
- Templates for what you send out
In the software your team already has, rather than in a format only a designer can open.
- A guideline document
Short, specific, and written for the people who will use it rather than for a shelf.
What we need from you
- Everything currently in use, good and bad
The inconsistent versions are the most useful input, because they show exactly where rules will be needed.
- Who signs off on the direction
Brand attracts opinions from everybody. One person has to be able to close the question.
- Who will produce material afterwards
Guidelines for an in-house team and guidelines for outside suppliers are written differently.
