Payments

Taking card payments on the site itself.

Money is taken on your own pages and settled into your account by a payment provider. Card numbers never reach your server or ours — the provider takes them directly, which is what keeps the compliance weight off your business rather than on it.

What we need from you

  • A registered business the provider can pay out to

Payouts go to a bank account in the same name as the registered entity. It is the item that most often has to be settled before anything else can begin, and it is entirely outside the software.

  • Which currencies you take, and where you will ship or serve

This decides which providers are suitable and what the fees look like. Adding a currency later is straightforward; changing provider afterwards means rebuilding the checkout.

  • Refund and cancellation terms, written down

The provider requires them published, and the software has to enforce them. Terms left vague turn into disputes that are settled by the provider rather than by you.

What is true once it is in

  • Receipts sent without anybody sending them

Issued on payment, from your own domain, carrying the details a customer needs for their own records.

  • Refunds your own team can issue

From a screen your staff can use, with the question of who is allowed to issue one answered by you rather than by the build.

  • Failed payments retried, and reported when they keep failing

A card that declines once is usually a temporary problem. One that declines repeatedly is a customer worth knowing about rather than a sale that quietly disappeared.

Fun fact

The last digit of a card number is not part of the account number. It is a check digit, worked out from the digits before it by a formula Hans Peter Luhn patented at IBM in 1960, and it is why a mistyped card can be caught before anything is sent anywhere.
