Stock and invoicing
Keeping the site and your own system telling one story.
Prices, stock levels and orders move between the site and whatever you already run the business in, so neither has to be kept up to date by hand. The connection is usually one-way for each kind of information, and which way is the whole design.
What we need from you
- The system you already use, and a way in to it
Some systems have a documented interface, some have an export, and some have neither. Which of the three it is decides most of the work.
- Which side is the one that counts when the two disagree
One system has to be the record. That is a decision about how the business runs, and it cannot be handed to the software to make.
- How quickly they have to agree — minutes, or overnight
Near-live and nightly are different builds at different costs. Overnight is sufficient considerably more often than people expect it to be.
What is true once it is in
- Stock on the site that reflects what is on the shelf
Within whatever interval you chose, with the case of something selling inside that interval handled deliberately rather than left to chance.
- Orders in your own system without anybody retyping them
Arriving in the fields your own system expects, rather than as a message somebody has to translate.
- A price changed once rather than in two places
Changed in whichever system owns prices, and reflected on the site without a second edit and without a delay nobody can explain.
Fun fact
The first barcode ever scanned in a shop was a ten-pack of Wrigley’s chewing gum, in Troy, Ohio, on the morning of 26 June 1974. The pack was not chosen for the occasion — somebody simply bought it, and it is now in the Smithsonian.
