Back-end

The logic, the data, and the contracts between them.

You own what happens after the request leaves the browser: the model, the rules that guard it, and the API the front-end is built against. Contracts are written first, so a change breaks the build rather than the client. A large part of the work is deciding what the data actually is — what is required, what may be missing, and what it means when two records disagree — before any of it reaches a table. You are also the person who has to think about the failure cases, because everything above you is written assuming you handled them.

What the week contains

  • APIs and data models

The shape of the data and the interface over it, designed together and versioned, because something is usually already built against both.

  • Accounts, roles and permissions

Access checked on the server, on every path, rather than hidden in the interface. This is the part that has to be right the first time.

  • Integrations with third-party systems

Talking to systems you do not control, and deciding what happens when they are slow, wrong, or simply not there.

  • Reversible migrations

Schema changes that can be rolled back, tested against a copy of real data before they are allowed near the original.

How applying goes

  1. 01Send your workA repository, a portfolio, or whatever you consider your best work. No cover letter, and no form that asks you to retype a CV you have already attached. If the best thing you have made is not public, describe what it did and what your part in it was.
  2. 02A reply from a personEither way, and from somebody who actually opened what you sent. Not an automated acknowledgement, and not silence — an application that goes no further still gets an answer.
  3. 03A conversation with your discipline leadWith whoever leads the discipline you applied to, not with a recruiter relaying answers. It is a conversation about work you have done rather than a quiz, and you are expected to ask as much as you answer.
