Support

Looking after sites and systems that are already live.

You look after what is already live, and you are the person a client messages. Most of the work is small and quick — an update, a content change, a fix — and handling it promptly is a large part of why clients stay. The harder half is judgement: what is urgent, what can wait, and what is a symptom of something larger that should be raised rather than patched. You are usually the first to know when something is wrong, often before any monitoring has said so.

What the week contains

  • Updates, fixes and small changes

Dependencies kept current and small work handled as it arrives, rather than saved up until it has become a project.

  • Watching uptime and acting on it

Noticing an outage before a client reports it, and knowing what to do next without waiting to be told.

  • Content changes the client cannot make themselves

The edits that fall outside what the editing tools cover, done quickly and without turning into a project.

  • Answering the people who write in

Replying in plain language, including when the answer is that something will take a while or cannot be done at all.

How applying goes

  1. 01Send your workA repository, a portfolio, or whatever you consider your best work. No cover letter, and no form that asks you to retype a CV you have already attached. If the best thing you have made is not public, describe what it did and what your part in it was.
  2. 02A reply from a personEither way, and from somebody who actually opened what you sent. Not an automated acknowledgement, and not silence — an application that goes no further still gets an answer.
  3. 03A conversation with your discipline leadWith whoever leads the discipline you applied to, not with a recruiter relaying answers. It is a conversation about work you have done rather than a quiz, and you are expected to ask as much as you answer.
