Infrastructure
Pipelines, hosting, monitoring and on-call.
You own the path a change takes from a commit to somebody’s screen, and the accounts it runs in. When production goes down, you are on call. The work rewards a certain suspicion: backups nobody has restored, certificates nobody is watching, and access granted once and never removed are what most incidents are actually made of. Much of the job is making the ordinary path reliable enough that nobody thinks about it, which means the work is largely invisible when it is going well.
What the week contains
- Build and deploy pipelines
The route from a commit to production: automated, repeatable, and quick enough that nobody is tempted to go around it.
- Hosting, domains and certificates
Where things run and how they are reached, including the renewals that stay silent until the day they fail.
- Monitoring, alerting and being on call
Alerts that reach a person and are worth being woken by. A noisy alert is worse than no alert, because it teaches everyone to ignore it.
- Backups that have been restored and checked
Restored into a working state on a schedule. A backup nobody has restored is an assumption rather than a backup.
How applying goes
- 01Send your workA repository, a portfolio, or whatever you consider your best work. No cover letter, and no form that asks you to retype a CV you have already attached. If the best thing you have made is not public, describe what it did and what your part in it was.
- 02A reply from a personEither way, and from somebody who actually opened what you sent. Not an automated acknowledgement, and not silence — an application that goes no further still gets an answer.
- 03A conversation with your discipline leadWith whoever leads the discipline you applied to, not with a recruiter relaying answers. It is a conversation about work you have done rather than a quiz, and you are expected to ask as much as you answer.
