Front-end
Interfaces built to their measurements and checked on real devices.
You build what design signed off, to its measurements, and the distance between close and exact is the job. The work is finished when it holds up on a real phone on a real connection, not when it looks right in a desktop browser at a convenient width. Accessibility and performance are part of what done means rather than a pass at the end, which makes them your problem while the code is being written. You are also the last person between a design decision and a user, so when something in the design cannot work, saying so early is part of the role.
What the week contains
- React and TypeScript
Typed components, with types that describe what the data really is rather than being waved through. The stack is React and TypeScript throughout.
- Accessibility as a baseline
Keyboard paths, focus order, contrast and semantics handled while the component is being written, and checked rather than assumed.
- Real devices, every release
Opened on actual handsets before anything ships. A resized desktop browser does not reproduce touch targets, scroll behaviour or a slow connection.
- Measured performance
What ships is profiled rather than estimated. A change that feels faster and measures slower is not an improvement.
How applying goes
- 01Send your workA repository, a portfolio, or whatever you consider your best work. No cover letter, and no form that asks you to retype a CV you have already attached. If the best thing you have made is not public, describe what it did and what your part in it was.
- 02A reply from a personEither way, and from somebody who actually opened what you sent. Not an automated acknowledgement, and not silence — an application that goes no further still gets an answer.
- 03A conversation with your discipline leadWith whoever leads the discipline you applied to, not with a recruiter relaying answers. It is a conversation about work you have done rather than a quiz, and you are expected to ask as much as you answer.
